VWAP Trading Lesson

Find fair value.
Trade the deviation.

VWAP gives you a volume-weighted reference price. Standard deviation bands show how far price has moved away from VWAP. RSI can then be used as a momentum confirmation tool rather than as a standalone signal.

VWAP + Standard Deviation Concepts

Use location first. RSI confirms the reaction.

VWAP

VWAP

Fair Value
VWAP represents the average traded price weighted by volume for the selected calculation period. It can act as a market reference point.
Price above VWAP can show stronger bullish conditions.
Price below VWAP can show stronger bearish conditions.
+1σ VWAP -1σ

±1 Standard Deviation

Normal Range
The first deviation band shows the first statistical distance away from VWAP. It can help you judge whether price is expanding away from fair value.
Use ±1σ as the first reference around VWAP.
Watch whether price accepts or rejects the band.
+2σ +1σ VWAP -1σ -2σ

±2 Standard Deviation

Extension
The second deviation shows a stronger extension from VWAP. It can become a decision area when combined with price action and momentum.
Look for reactions at ±2σ.
Use RSI and market structure to filter the setup.
-3σ EXTREME

±3 Standard Deviation

Extreme Zone
The third deviation represents a large distance from VWAP. It is not automatically a reversal signal. It becomes more interesting when price rejects the zone.
Do not sell simply because price touches +3σ.
Do not buy simply because price touches -3σ.
REJECTION -3σ

BUY: -2σ / -3σ Rejection

Bullish Setup
Price reaches a lower deviation, rejects the area and RSI confirms that bearish momentum is becoming exhausted.
Location: -2σ or -3σ.
Confirmation: bullish rejection plus RSI confirmation.
Potential targets: -1σ, then VWAP.
REJECTION +3σ

SELL: +2σ / +3σ Rejection

Bearish Setup
Price reaches an upper deviation, rejects the area and RSI confirms that bullish momentum is weakening.
Location: +2σ or +3σ.
Confirmation: bearish rejection plus RSI confirmation.
Potential targets: +1σ, then VWAP.

RSI 3 Confirmation

Momentum
A fast RSI can help confirm momentum extremes and shifts. In this framework, RSI is confirmation after price reaches a meaningful VWAP zone.
Suggested settings: RSI Period 3, OB 90, OS 10.
Use RSI after location, not instead of location.
VWAP HOLD +2σ

Continuation vs Reversion

Key Lesson
Extreme bands do not always mean reversal. In strong trends, price can ride an outer band. VWAP position and market structure help separate continuation from reversion.
Strong trend + VWAP hold can favor continuation.
Clear rejection + RSI extreme can favor mean reversion.

Core Trading Model

Location → Reaction → RSI → Entry → Risk.

1. Locate VWAP Mark the VWAP and identify whether price is trading above or below it. This gives you the central reference.
2. Identify the deviation Check whether price is near ±1σ, ±2σ or ±3σ. The further price moves from VWAP, the more important the reaction becomes.
3. Wait for price action Look for rejection, engulfing behavior, a market structure shift, or another entry trigger from your trading plan.
4. Use RSI as confirmation With RSI 3, look for oversold behavior around lower deviations and overbought behavior around upper deviations. Do not use RSI alone.
5. Choose the trade type Decide whether you are trading mean reversion back toward VWAP or continuation with the existing trend.
6. Define risk before entry Your invalidation level should be defined before the order. The deviation band is a location, not automatically your stop.
Recommended Elohim FX Framework
BUY: Price reaches -2σ / -3σ → rejection → RSI 3 confirms oversold momentum → bullish structure → entry → target -1σ / VWAP.
SELL: Price reaches +2σ / +3σ → rejection → RSI 3 confirms overbought momentum → bearish structure → entry → target +1σ / VWAP.
CONTINUATION: Strong trend → price holds VWAP or an outer band → pullback → structure confirmation → continuation entry.
